Sixty years of anatomical research and education in Pécs

Béla Flerkó (1924–2003)

Abstract

Professor Béla Flerkó (1924–2003) was a key figure in the research staff of the Medical University of Pécs. He completed his medical studies with honours at Hungarian Royal Elisabeth University. From 1946 he worked at the Institute of Anatomy led by János Szentágothai. He was appointed head of department from 1964, which he held until 1992. He also served as rector of the Medical University of Pécs between 1979 and 1985. He also served as rector of the Medical University of Pécs between 1979 and 1985. His main area of research was neuroendocrinology, mainly the neurohormonal function and regulatory processes of the pituitary gland, as well as reproductive biology issues. He has been a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1982. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was repeatedly invited to a foreign research institute (UCLA, University of Maryland). He was an invited speaker at “Geoffrey Harris Memorial Lecture” in 1979. He has been a leader and member of several prestigious domestic and international scientific organizations. The most significant of these are membership of the International Society for Brain Research (IBRO) and the International Society of Endocrinology, where he has also held the position of president.
