AIM OF THE PAPER
Small and medium sized companies mean substantial factors in most economies. This study intends to add to literature by investigating their practice with a focus on their green purchasing activity and some related characteristics.
METHODOLOGY
After a brief literature review on green purchasing and SMEs, the paper analyses the results of a survey, which was carried out in Hungary. It compares the practice of SMEs with that of large companies and highlights the differences in their aims, practice, motivation and company background.
MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS
Results revealed that larger companies are more cost conscious, have better environmental management systems, more active to use supply management tools, have better market position, and have better opportunities on supply markets. SMEs have weaker support of management/owners, while the market demand and legislation are among the most important motivations in case of the two groups.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The role and development of SMEs is key in the economy as a whole. The development of their management, practice and their relations to greener practice is important subject of discussions and further research pointing out ways forward.
