Globalization has brought people from different linguistic backgrounds into societies around the world, creating
superdiverse linguistic spaces. Upon arrival the newcomers begin to acquire the language of the host country. This
paper examines the initial phases of this language acquisition, the process of reactive communication. It illustrates the stages with linguistic examples from the author's research database on multilingualism. Finally, the
phenomenon of reactive communication is defined.
