This paper is a methodological experiment to evaluate from a landscape and environmental
aesthetic point of view the natural and artifical environment of the Tisza bank, which serves as the
coulisse of water tourism. The studied section of the river, from the Hungarian border to
Tiszakécske, Hungary, was divided into mostly homogeneous "visual units", each of them was
evaluated separately. The pursuit of objectivity was a seeded goal during the evaluation, which was
achieved by using the "three value selection" method. Based on the evaluation of visual units the
river sections were separated into three categories: the attractive (genarating positive emotions),
the less inspiring (or neutral), and the unattractive landscapes, laden by visual conflicts. During the
fieldwork on the sample areas we realised, that the Tisza river is free of major visual conflicts.
None ot the selected sample areas were classified into the lowest ranked (heavily deteriorated by
visual conflicts) category
