Abstract

The European Capital of Culture (ECOC) title enables European citizens to learn about one
another’s culture, to admire the relics of their common past, and to experience the wealth of
European values and the sense of belonging together. So far 60 cities had the privilege to bear
the title, which had has brought long term development in the cultural infrastructure of the
cities and has enhanced the self-esteem of the citizens and their pride of the city. Due to the
title the image of the cities has improved, it has enhanced the participation in the culture of
the city while also bringing more recognition and economic impacts through tourism.
The research including the content analysis of the bidbooks of Debrecen, Győr and
Veszprém and interviews conducted with the members of the winning presentation team
focused on the role of tourism and the innovative approaches to tourism. One obvious aim
of the Veszprém 2023 is motivating mobility, enhancing the volume of cultural tourism and
putting the Veszprém-Balaton region on the European map. Based on the research findings
we can conclude that the ECOC project is looking for answers to real-life questions such as
how to ease seasonality by the Balaton region, how to widen cultural consumption while also
strengthening economic and social sustainability and fostering regional cooperation.
