Abstract

In Hungary, in the years following the change in the political system, civil society organizations also played
a major role in boosting tourism and in economic development. An association was established in Szekszárd
in 1999 by 64 founding members, with the primary aim of supporting wineries that produce high quality
wine, promoting the cultivated wine consumption, making the wine region more popular and promoting
wine tourism.
The study presents the way to the establishment of the Szekszárd wine route. The coordinated work
of the local community – primarily in winemaking, hospitality and tourism – has led to the wine region
being one of the favourite destinations of tourists today.
My domestic and international experience as a founding member and later the director of the
Szekszárd Wine Region Wine Route Association, using the association's data and documents related to the
operation of the early years, help to clarify the subject.
