Abstract

Green infrastructure (GI) became a widely used term in the scientific literature and everyday life. But what
is green infrastructure? Green infrastructure is a network of natural, semi-natural areas and open spaces
managed to maintain natural ecosystems and their services, air and water quality, and deliver wide range of
goods and services for wildlife and society. In the late 1990’s emerged the term of sustainable tourism
highlighting the optimal use of natural resources, preservation of cultural heritage. Recently eco-tourism and
other “environmental” friendly tourism types (nature/landscape tourism) became dominant.
The term of green infrastructure can have a major effect on the above mentioned tourism types. So
we focused our research on the synergies and possible relations of these two areas. We have chosen three
study areas of different tourist potential: the popular tourist destination of micro-region Gönc, the famous
and highly popular Balatonfüred and micro-region of Csorna of mostly rural tourism potential. All of the
study regions are rural regions but can be characterized by highly different natural and social conditions. In
our study we highlight the most important determinants of the relation of green infrastructure and tourism
development.
