Abstract

Our research focuses on lifestyle migration, a much weaker flow than the main migration flows,
moving into the opposite direction, but having significant impacts on the local society and
economy. Lifestyle migrants, being rather affluent, many of them retired, move to a foreign
country, including Hungary, in the hope of higher living standards and better security conditions.
Our research focuses on foreign buyers of real estate in the West-Balaton area, who had previously
visited the area as tourists. Since the 1990-es several waves of foreign buyers have arrived from
different countries. The motivations of foreign buyers today are compared to motivations revealed
by a previous research done 16 years ago. The main difference is the emergence of a new
motivation, namely security, which, together with the former motivating factors, results in a better
lifestyle and a more comfortable way of life for the middle-class foreigners choosing this area as
their new home.
