The Impact and Perception of WorldSkills and EuroSkills Competitions in Hungary

Abstract

This study examines the dissonance between the public perception of vocational education in Hungary and the cutting-edge technological performance demonstrated at WorldSkills and EuroSkills competitions. It analyzes the period from the Hungarian teams' entry in 2006 through WorldSkills Lyon 2024, breaking down the history of participation into four distinct developmental phases (from technological islands through the chamber model to contemporary digital industrialization). The paper discusses in detail the methodological evolution of competition organization, with particular attention to the introduction of test project confidentiality and the rise of digital evaluation systems, which fundamentally changed preparation strategies. The study presents the three dominant models of talent development in Hungary, comparing them with key international practices, such as the Asian elite sports model or the dual system of the DACH region. It addresses the impact of competitions on the vocational training system, analyzing how international standards are integrated into the Training and Output Requirements (KKK) and the work of the Sectoral Skills Councils. Finally, the study examines career guidance aspects, emphasizing the role of the Profession Star Festival, experiential education, and peer influence ("peer-to-peer communication") in Generation Z's career choices. The conclusion highlights that international competitions have now transcended the nature of a one-off event: they have become quality assurance indicators and drivers of innovation for Hungarian vocational education and training.
