Author Guidelines

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Pólusok (Polarities) invites papers and book reviews in political science and international relations, as well as in their broader interdisciplinary fields (security policy, international law, regional studies, etc.). When submitting manuscripts to the journal, please avoid purely historical articles and focus on contemporary issues. The journal publishes articles in three sections: Studies, Book Reviews, and Situation Reports. The Studies section is responsible for publishing original research papers, theoretical contributions and literature reviews. Situation reports focus on the analysis of short-term events that have significant impacts (e.g. elections). Contributions to these sections should be written in accordance with the following guidelines.

REQUIRED INFORMATION AND SECTIONS

The submission should include the following information in the order and format listed below:

  • Name of the author(s)
  • Institutional affiliation and position
  • E-mail address
  • ORCID-ID
  • Title of the study
  • Maximum 6-12 line abstract
  • 4-5 keywords
  • Introduction, main text, conclusion (appendix, if applicable)
  • References

Manuscripts should have a minimum of 20,000 and a maximum of 40,000 characters, including spaces but excluding references. For book reviews, the maximum length is 15,000 characters, while the book reviewed should have been published within the last 3 years. Longer manuscripts, up to 60,000 characters, will only be accepted by the Editorial Board in justified cases (e.g. when publishing the results of empirical research). Manuscripts should be written in Times New Roman, 12-point size, and single-spaced. Please use American English when preparing the manuscript.

From 2024 the journal uses the APA reference style (7th edition). For citations and references please follow these guidelines: citation style; bibliographic style

For all relevant bibliographic references, please include the DOI identifier of the article in weblink format. The identifiers are available at the following link: https://www.crossref.org/guestquery

FIGURES AND TABLES

The journal publishes only figures and tables prepared by the authors, although data reproduced by the authors' own editing may originate from secondary sources. Please insert figures and tables in the text and send them as a separate file with the manuscript. Figures should be attached as image files with a resolution of at least 150-300 dpi in TIFF or PNG format. As an online journal, Polarities also includes colour illustrations, however, the use of bright colours should be avoided. When designing figures, please consider readable sizes and a coherent layout.

When positioning figures and tables in the text, please ensure that they are placed in the relevant parts of the text, in accordance with the content. The order of their positioning should be indicated by numbering, in the following format:

- For figures, diagrams, maps, uniformly: Figure 1: Title; Figure 2: Title; etc.

- For tables: Table 1: Title; Table 2: Title, etc.

It is also necessary to indicate the data sources used, which should be inserted under the figures and tables in the following format, based on the criteria for intertextual references:

- Own editing, data source: Pálné, 2016: 45.

- In the case of an Internet source, indicate the author or corporate author, the web link to the source, and the date of last access. In this case, the format should be: own editing, data source: UNDP, www.undp.com, last accessed on 06.05.2020.

Figures and tables, their titles and sources should be arranged consistently to the left. The journal does not publish photographs for illustrative purposes.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Polarities accepts articles and reviews for online publication. After registration, manuscripts and their accompanying figures and tables can be uploaded at https://journals.lib.pte.hu/index.php/polusok. For further assistance with the registration and submission process, please consult the user guide at https://openjournalsystems.com/ojs-3-user-guide.

PEER REVIEW PROCESS

The review procedure consists of two major stages. In the first phase, the editorial team evaluates the submitted papers and sends only those that are grammatically and conceptually correct for peer review. In the case of minor errors, the author(s) may make revisions, but all corrections are the sole responsibility of the author(s).

In the second stage, submissions that pass the initial screening are reviewed by two anonymous and independent reviewers who receive the manuscript without the author(s)' name(s). To ensure the objectivity of the review process, please do not include the name of the author(s) in the text of the manuscript. Reviewers are selected on the basis of their expertise, and must not be affiliated with author(s)' institution(s). Publication of a paper is subject to the opinion of the reviewers, and in the case of conflicting opinions, the Editorial Board will decide whether to accept or reject the paper. Compliance with the formal requirements is a precondition for initiating the peer review process.

PUBLICATION

Beginning in 2024, the journal will abandon its current practice of publishing contributions collectively, issue by issue, and will instead publish papers individually. In practice, this means that the Winter/Spring (1) and Summer/Autumn (2) issues will be maintained, but accepted papers will be published on the website as soon as they are finalized and edited, and their respective DOI numbers will be also automatically assigned. This means that studies finalized between January and June will be published in the first issue of the calendar year, and those concluded between July and December will be released in the second issue. In both cases, the page numbers will continue until the closing date of that issue. We are confident that this change will improve the quality and efficiency of manuscript publication.

Pólusok/Polarities provides its publishing services free of charge, charging authors no fees for submitting manuscripts, editorial work or publication. Access to archived issues of our journal is also free. For information on guest editing special issues, please contact polusok@pte.hu.
