Abstract

Our essay aims to make a summary about the impact of tourism and urban sprawl through the case study of
Zadar. The former Yugoslavian regional development and political directives had positive effect on the
Croatian tourism until the Yugoslav wars which pushed the development back for approximately ten years.
Using satellite pictures, we examined the sprawl process of Zadar, which has definitely changed in the last
30 years. The growth process is pretty similar to Russell Arthur Smith’s model (1991). The difference stems
from the fact that there isn’t exact plan to regulate the ways of urban sprawl and tourism development that is
still working uncontrolled.
