The Situation and Potential Development Directions of Tourism in Szigetköz

Szigetköz is a special area of Hungary, which has several qualities that can be built upon to be successful in the tourism market. However, despite its excellent qualities, the area cannot be considered a particularly successful tourism destination.
This study uses quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (structured interview, content analysis) methods to determine how tourism in Szigetköz can be characterised today and what development directions can be proposed for the area based on local assets and values, considering the principles of sustainability. To this end, local experts and tourism stakeholders from 35 municipalities in the Szigetköz have been involved.
The results show clear shortcomings in terms of, among other things, well thought-out and coherent marketing, coherent market presence and a brand describing the Szigetköz as a tourist destination.
