The role of tourism in rural development has been long recognised also in Hungary, and tourism is seen as
an especially important tool in the development of areas backward from socio-economic aspect where other
economic activities have weak chances. Border regions are often backward, but, just because of their
isolation, have preserved natural and cultural values that can be the foundation of their tourism development.
The Dráva Region is one of the poorest areas in Hungary, but it is a region outstandingly rich in natural
values. Despite the significant amounts of previous supports, it is only excursionists that have discovered the
area so far; the number of tourists and guest nights is still extremely slow. The paper analyses the problems
and provides recommendations for the development of the region’s tourism in a way that the results can be
partly or completely utilised for the other similar domestic areas.
