The 287(g) program is a controversial element of the United States' immigration enforcement policy, which authorizes state and local law enforcement agencies to participate directly in the enforcement of federal immigration laws. The study examines in detail the program’s origins, operation, and changes from the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 to the second Trump administration, as well as its effects on immigrant communities and public safety. The work of civil organizations also plays an important role in the study, as these organizations provide essential assistance in legal representation and the documentation of violations, and support for the affected communities. Nevertheless, the program’s negative impacts remain significant.
