Childbearing for the nation?
The association between national identity and fertility intentions from a demographic perspective
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the individual’s national identity and their fertility intentions. First, I attempt to integrate the concept of national identity into the current theoretical framework that explains fertility decisions. Then, after developing a scale to measure national identity, I conduct an empirical analysis on a representative sample of young adults from Hungary. I hypothesize a positive relationship between national identity and fertility intentions, given the specific pro-natalist social, political, and social policy environment in Hungary. The multivariate analyses confirm this hypothesis, showing that individuals with a stronger cognitive and emotional attachment to their nation have significantly higher fertility intentions. Overall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of fertility decisions and outlines new directions for future research.
