This study presents the life and career of rower Róbert Zimonyi, who is among Hungary’s lesser-known Olympic champions. In fact, it can be argued that outside of a very narrow circle, he is practically unknown in his home country, despite being the only Hungarian athlete to have won Olympic medals representing two different nations: a bronze for Hungary and a gold as an American citizen.
The study details how he rebuilt his life in the United States following the 1956 revolution and how he reached the pinnacle of his career at the age of 46. The research highlights a specific “memory deficit” in Hungarian sports history, examining how Róbert Zimonyi’s name was effectively erased from domestic sports records and public memory for decades. In addition to contemporary press archives, the author utilized family memoirs to compose the study, thereby offering a glimpse into a family history fraught with the struggles of the twentieth century.
