Abstract

In 1793-1794, the German naturalist and botanist Johann Centurius von Hofmannsegg (1766-1849) visited our country to get to know the natural conditions, flora, fauna, and insects of Hungary, and to expand his natural science collections.

He traveled through the country from Győr to Transylvania, hunting, collecting plants and insects, admiring the cities and nature. He made acquaintances and friendships, studied the life of the population regardless of social affiliation, acknowledged the positive and criticized the negative things. A significant part of his travel report is written about Pécs (his favorite Hungarian city) and its inhabitants. His travel experiences were printed in both German and Hungarian languages.
